A Summer Look into Chip Kelly’s 2011 Recruiting Efforts

It’s middle July and less then a month before fall practice begins. The summer heat rises and high school athletes continue there tour of summer camps and university campuses.  Currently, Oregon has six verbal commitments for the class of 2011, and here is a look at the offers Chip Kelly and company have on the table.

Quarterbacks (4)

The quarterback position will be left with three returning players following the 2010season.  Marcus Mariota has been rumored to be swaying with his verbal, and Jerrard Randall continues to impress. The size of Brett Hundley would be a a great addition to Kelly’s offense, but many believe he doesn’t have Oregon in his top two.

Brett Hundley. 6-4’/217 lbs. Chandler, Arizona ****

Jerrard Randall. 6-2’/185 lbs. Hollywood, Florida **** Oregon Verbal

Marcus Mariota. 6-4’/190 lbs. Honolulu, Hawaii *** Oregon Verbal

Johnny Manziel. 6-0’/175 lbs. Kerrville, Texas ** Oregon Verbal

Running Back (1)

It is not surprising that Oregon has only one offer to a prep running back on the table. Gary Campbell pulled in both Lache Seastrunk and Dontae Williams in 2010, and the only departure will be Remene Alston following the 2010 season.

Daniel Lasco. 6-2’/195 lbs. The Woodlands, Texas ****

Wide Receiver (10)

It is clear to see what position the coaching staff is focusing on for 2011.  Both D.J. Davis, and Jeffrey Maehl are entering their final seasons, and the future of Diante Jackson and Tyrece Gaines is still unknown.  Of these ten offers, only four potential commits come from the west coast.

Kasen Williams. 6-2’/195 lbs. Sammanish, Washington *****

George Farmer. 6-2’/210 lbs. Gardena, California *****

DeAnthony Arnett. 6-0’/170 lbs. Saginaw, Michigan ****

Darius Jennings. 5-11’/175 lbs. Baltimore, Maryland ****

Lafonte Thourogood. 6-3’/225 lbs. Virginia Beach, Virginia ****

Richard Rodgers. 6-4’/233 lbs. Shrewsbury, Massachusetts **

Rahsaan Vaughn. 6-0’/190 lbs. San Mateo, California (JC) **

Tight End (3)

It would be a great luxury receive a commitment from a tight end in 2011. It would give a freshman tight end the chance to spend a year behind David Paulson and Brandon Williams.  Paulson, and Williams are entering their junior seasons, and Malachi Lewis will depart from the team in 2010.  Brandon Fulse reportedly has the Ducks very high on his list.

Brandon Fulse. 6-5’/245 lbs. Fort Meade, Florida ****

Troy Niklas. 6-5’/245 lbs. Anaheim, California ****

Raymond Nelson. 6-5’/215 lbs. Modesto, California ***

Offensive Tackle (4)

Steve Greatwood has already received one verbal for 2011, and it is safe to say he needs a few more.  Oregon will lose five offensive lineman in 2010, and only added two in last years class. An interesting prospect is Patrick Flavin who stands 6-7′ tall.

Paulay Asiata. 6-5’/290 lbs. Honolulu, Hawaii ****

Tyler Johnstone. 6-6’/290 lbs. Chandler, Arizona ***

Patrick Flavin. 6-7’/260 lbs. Lisle, Illinois ***

Andre Yruretagoyena. 6-4’/265 lbs. Scottsdale, Arizona **** Oregon Verbal

Offensive Guard (3)

California prep Jamal Prater has Oregon at the top of his list, and one must assume he can’t give a verbal until he visits Eugene.  An intriguing recruit is Spencer Region from Cullman, Alabama.  Region weighs in at 345 pounds.

Spencer Region. 6-6’/345 lbs. Cullman, Alabama ****

Dontae Levingston. 6-4’/285 lbs. Harbor City, California ***

Jamal Prater. 6-5’/280 lbs. Etiwanda, California *** Oregon Soft Verbal

Defensive Tackle (7)

A yearly emphasis is placed on bringing in more talent and bulk to the defensive tackle position.  Zac Clark and Brandon Bair are entering senior seasons, and there remains a good possibility that Ricky Heimuli will take a two year mission. Hailing from the same area as David Paulson, Danny Shelton currently has the Ducks very high on his list.

Todd Barr. 6-3’/265 lbs. Lakewood, California ****

Christian Heyward. 6-3’/266 lbs. San Diego, California ****

Mickey Johnson. 6-3’/280 lbs. Covington, Louisiana ****

Danny Shelton. 6-3’/286 lbs. Auburn, Washington ****

Isiah Norton. 6-5’/290 lbs. Dallas, Texas ****

Roderick Byers. 6-3’/262 lbs. Rock Hill, South Carolina ***

Mo Latu. 6-2’/305 lbs. Gilbert, Arizona ***

Defensive End (8)

One would hope Jerry Azzinaro and Nick Aliotti are heavily pursuing Portland’s Brennan Scarlett.  Another interesting note is that Oregon is recruiting two defensive ends from Gainesville, Florida.  Azzinaro will lose Kenny Rowe following the season, and if both Dion Jordan and Terrell Turner continue to progress the immediate need of this position will be lightened.

Greg Townsend. 6-4’/240 lbs. Beverly Hills, California *****

Brennan Scarlett. 6-4’/245 lbs. Portland, Oregon ****

Ricardo Williams. 6-5’/210 lbs. Homestead, Florida ***

Trevarris Saulsberry. 6-4’/230 lbs. Gainesville, Florida ***

James Euscher. 6-7’/278 lbs. Beaverton, Oregon **

Koa Ka’ai. 6-4’/235 lbs. Honolulu, Hawaii **

Jordan Williams. 6-4’/230 lbs. Gainesville, Florida **

Sam Kamp. 6-4’/225 lbs. Mesa, Arizona *** Oregon Verbal

Outside Linebacker (6)

Much like Scarlett, it is very important for the Ducks to heavily persuade Hillsboro’s Colt Lyerla to make the move to Eugene.  With a limited number of elite in-state recruits, it is essential that Oregon can receive commitments from these talented players.  Aliotti’s defense will see the departures of Spencer Paysinger and Bryson Littlejohn in 2010.

Colt Lyerla. 6-5’/225 lbs. Hillsboro, Oregon *****

Jason Gibson. 6-2’/210 lbs. Gardena, California ****

Ryan Simmons. 6-1’/218 lbs. Cibolo, Texas ***

Sean Duggan. 6-4’/214 lbs. Cincinnati, Ohio ***

Rahim Cassell. 6-1’/220 lbs. Lakewood, California ***

Kyrie Wilson. 6-2’/210 lbs. Bakersfield, California **

Middle Linebacker (2)

Don’t be surprised if Oregon doesn’t pick up any commitments at the middle linebackerposition in 2011. Michael Clay appears to be the heir apparent to Casey Matthews, and the Ducks will have between seven and nine linebackers on the roster heading into the 2011 season.

Travis Hughes. 6-1’/220 lbs. Virginia Beach, Virginia *****

Lamar Dawson. 6-2’/230 lbs. Danville, Kentucky ****

Safety (6)

Coach John Neal picked up a huge verbal commit from Lake Oswego’s Tyson Colemanearly in the year.  Marvin Johnson is heading into his senior season, and Javes Lewis will be the lone senior in 2011. Neal picked up the highly recruited Eric Dargan in 2010, and needs to stock pile the position with talent for future seasons.

George Atkinson. 6-2’/198 lbs. Livermore, California ****

Kelvin Fisher. 6-0’/180 lbs. Gilbert, Arizona ****

James Sample. 6-2’/195 lbs. Sacramento, California ****

Avery Walls. 5-11’/190 lbs. McDonough, Georgia ****

T.K. Fleming. 6-2’/200 lbs. Benton, Louisiana ***

Tyson Coleman. 6-2’/195 lbs. Lake Oswego, Oregon **** Oregon Verbal

Cornerback (4)

Oregon is certainly looking strong at cornerback, with an abundance of young talent acquired in the 2009 and 2010 classes.  Talmadge Jackson III will depart after 2010, and only William Wallace and Anthony Gildon become seniors in 2011.  Josh Atkinson of Livermore, California reportedly has the Ducks high on his list.

Stefan McClure. 5-11’/175 lbs. Vista, California ****

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. 5-10’/180 lbs. Chino Hills, California ****

Josh Atkinson. 6-0’/180 lbs. Livermore, California ***

Marcus Peters. 5-11’/195 lbs. Oakland, California ***
